If you instead water a little over the leaves every day, you risk shallow roots, fungal infestation and waterlogging. The most reliable way to do this is with a passive irrigation system that releases water evenly over days.
Understanding plant watering: how much water plants really need

That's why a fixed watering amount according to the calendar rarely achieves the goal - what matters is how moist the soil actually is at a depth of five centimeters.

There are five points to decide whether a system is right for you. Go through them in this order - the answer to the first question usually narrows down the selection significantly.

It is also important how visible the solution can be. In the living room, an upturned PET bottle is more annoying than a flat clay cone; In raised beds, volume is more important than appearance.
Why even watering is crucial for growth
Plants absorb water through fine root hairs and transport it to the leaves, where it evaporates. This suction simultaneously moves the nutrient salts up from the soil. If the substrate dries out significantly in between, this flow stops: the plant closes its stomata, stops photosynthesis and grows more slowly - even if it gets enough water again later.
The opposite is just as harmful. If the water sits permanently in the pot, it pushes the air out of the pores, the roots suffocate and rot pathogens have an easy time of it. Changing extremes are more stressful for most crops than a constant average moisture level. This is exactly what passive systems do: they only release water when the surrounding soil becomes drier.
Brown, dry leaf tips usually indicate a lack of water or dry air. Yellow, soft leaves on the bottom of the shoot, on the other hand, are a typical sign of too much water. If you confuse the two and continue to water, you will make the damage worse.

Four types have become established for watering plants in the home and garden. The main difference between them is their water supply and how inconspicuously they work.

Olla – buried sound storage
A clay pot is buried up to the neck in the bed or bucket and filled with water. Moisture is released directly into the root zone via the porous wall.
Advantages: large supply, hardly any evaporation loss, invisible in the bed, no electricity required.
Disadvantages: Requires space in the substrate, must be dug up before winter, installation only really convenient when planting. -
Clay cone with bottle
A clay cone is stuck in the ground with a filled wine or PET bottle sitting on top of it as a storage container.
Advantages: Can be used immediately, cheap per plant, bottles are reused, good for balcony boxes and pots.
Disadvantages: Visible bottle, limited volume (usually 0.75–1.5 l), harder to insert in heavily rooted soil. -
Clay cone with cup attachment
Instead of the bottle, a closed cup sits on the cone, which is refilled from above.
Advantages: More volume than a bottle, refilling without pulling out the cone, stable in raised beds.
Disadvantages: clearly visible, attachments are usually only compatible with the associated cone. -
Water storage mat
An absorbent mat is placed under or in the container, stores water and returns it to the substrate as needed.
Advantages: flat, inconspicuous, good for planters with little depth and for growing trays.
Disadvantages: smaller supply, bridges days rather than weeks.

How do you water plants correctly? Quantity and timing
It is better to water vigorously every three days rather than sparingly every day. Water should penetrate to the lower half of the root ball, otherwise plants will only form superficial roots and suffer again every hot day. As a guide: for a bucket, about a tenth of the pot's volume per watering session - for ten liters of substrate, around one liter, in two batches with a short break so that the water can seep in.
The best time is early morning. The ground is still cool, there is less evaporation, and damp leaves dry off as the day progresses. Evening watering promotes fungal diseases on cool nights and attracts snails. Check with your finger beforehand: If the soil is still moist two to three centimeters below the surface, wait.
A layer of mulch made from grass clippings, straw or wood fiber keeps the soil moist for measurably longer because it slows down evaporation on the surface. In combination with a clay cone or an Olla, the refill interval is often extended by several days.
Watering plants on vacation
First, calculate how much water the plants will need while you are away: number of days times estimated daily requirement. For a medium-sized balcony plant, 0.2 to 0.5 liters per day is realistic in summer, and significantly more for a tomato in a large pot. This value determines whether one bottle per plant is enough or whether you need a cup attachment or a larger olla.
Three measures further increase the range: place the pot in a semi-shady place before departure, remove flowers and excess shoots, and water thoroughly again on the day of departure so that the system only has to re-dose. Also, test a new system a week in advance - this way you can see how quickly your soil's supply actually drops.

Do not place clay cones in the middle of the ball, but about a hand's width away from the trunk and at an angle to the root zone. This means that the water reaches the absorbent fine roots instead of the woody main root.
Why spray plants - and when you shouldn't
Spraying is not a substitute for watering. It briefly increases the humidity around the leaves and is particularly helpful for tropical houseplants that are exposed to dry heating air: ferns, calathea, monstera or orchids. Side effect: dust is washed away and spider mites, which like dry air, find worse conditions.
You should avoid this on plants with hairy or felty leaves such as African violets and succulents - drops remain there and promote stains or rot. Spraying outdoors in the sun is also unfavorable: wet leaves in the midday heat promote leaf burns and fungal infections. If possible, use low-lime, room temperature water.
Rainwater is almost always the better choice for watering plants: it is soft, lime-free and at ambient temperature. If you use a rain barrel, you save drinking water and at the same time prevent limescale on the substrate and leaves.
Advantages and disadvantages of automatic plant watering
Automatic and passive systems relieve work - but they do not completely replace the view of the plant. This comparison helps with the decision.

How does plant watering with clay work?
Unglazed clay is microporous. If the surrounding earth is drier than the water supply in the vessel, it draws in moisture through these pores; If the ground is moist, the exchange almost stops. The system doses itself, without a valve, pump or timer.
How long do clay cones and ollas last without refilling?
This depends on the size of the stock, the weather and the plant. A 0.75 liter bottle on a clay cone usually supplies a medium-sized potted plant for a few days to around a week, while a 6.5 liter storage tank in a raised bed will last longer. At temperatures above 30 degrees, the range drops significantly - test it out before your vacation.
How often do I have to water houseplants?
Not according to the calendar, but according to soil moisture. Check two to three centimeters below the surface: If the soil there feels dry, water - thoroughly until water appears in the saucer. Pour off excess water after ten minutes to avoid waterlogging.
Can I leave clay cones in the ground in winter?
Better not. If residual water freezes in the clay, the material can crack. Remove cones and ollas in late fall, rinse, allow to dry completely, and store frost-free.
