Buy balcony privacy screen: the right variant for your railing
Privacy protection for the balcony is available as a dimensionally stable plastic mesh with a rattan look, as a soft textile fabric and as a natural mat made of reeds. This is what matters when choosing
Five points decide whether the privacy screen ultimately fits:
- Material: Plastic mesh is the easiest choice to care for – it retains its shape, is UV-resistant and washable. Natural mats appear warmer, but become brittle when exposed to constant moisture and often only last for one or two seasons.
- Dimension: Usual parapets are 90 to 110 cm high. Measure the height of the filling and length across all sides of the balcony, then shorten the roll.
- Color: Anthracite and light gray look reserved on metal railings, straw colors and green go well with wood. Dark tones are more opaque from the outside, light ones let more light through.
- Wind resistance: It is caused by the fastening, not by the material. Fix every 20 to 30 cm instead of just at the corners.
- Rain: A privacy screen is water-repellent, but not a roof. If you want furniture to stay dry, we take care of that tarpaulins.
TIP
Measure on the outside of the railing, not the inside, and add around 10 cm per corner. Otherwise the gap will remain open right at the corner – where the view comes in from the side.
Balcony privacy screens and regulations: what tenants are allowed to install
In principle, a privacy screen is part of the normal use of the balcony, as long as it is installed without interfering with the building structure and does not conspicuously change the appearance of the facade. Connected to the inside of the railing, at parapet height and in a calm color, it is therefore usually unproblematic. It becomes critical with screwed constructions, elements above the parapet and strong colors. House rules, rental agreement and - in the case of ownership - the community's resolution always take precedence.

What privacy screen is allowed on the balcony?
Any privacy screen that sits on the inside of the railing without drilling, does not exceed the height of the parapet and does not significantly alter the facade is permitted. Tethered mats accomplish this; Screwed walls and eye-catching colors require the consent of the landlord or homeowners' association.
How high can the privacy screen be on the balcony?
As a rule of thumb, up to the top edge of the parapet, i.e. around 90 to 110 cm. Anything above that changes the view of the facade and requires approval. For more height in the seating area, a free-standing screen is the easier way.
How do I attach a balcony privacy screen without drilling?
Use cable ties or plastic clips every 20 to 30 cm through the mesh and around the balusters. On glass or sheet metal balustrades, clamp holders grip above the top edge. Shorten cable tie ends so that no sharp edges remain.
Can you wash balcony privacy screens?
Plastic mesh does not belong in the washing machine, but should be cleaned on the railing with a garden hose, a soft brush and a little detergent. According to the label, textile coverings often allow 30 °C without spinning. High-pressure cleaners are taboo for both.
Which plants are suitable as privacy screens for the balcony?
The most reliable are bamboo in a pot - such as Fargesia, which grows without runners - and fast climbers such as black-eyed Susan on one climbing aid. However, plants need a season's lead time and are bare in winter - it's best to use mesh as a base, plants in front of it.
